Enhancing the Seed Systems in Tanzania (ESSETA) – A turning point for Tanzania’s Seed Sector
Over the past five years, Tanzania’s seed sector has recorded significant progress, driven in large part by Agri Experience’s leadership in implementing ESSETA, a Gates Foundation-funded initiative, which aimed to improve the efficiency, coordination, and performance of key public institutions responsible for delivering quality seed to farmers while fostering a sustainable, private sector-led seed industry.
Interventions included the development of a digital seed sector platform to strengthen information sharing and improve seed demand forecasting, the renovation and equipping of two strategic seed testing laboratories, and support for a decentralized seed quality assurance system that enables authorized private seed inspectors and laboratory analysts. These efforts have contributed to stronger national planning and improved information exchange within the Ministry of Agriculture, supporting the continued growth of Tanzania’s seed sector.
